VINEGAR-FREE HOMEMADE GLASS & FLOOR CLEANER

Most homemade glass/floor cleaner recipes call for vinegar. And I can see why. It's inexpensive. It kills germs. It's safe enough to drink. But if you can't even use it because your husband and kids won't stop complaining about the smell, it's just not going to work. So I switched to an alcohol-based recipe that no one has complained about yet! I think it works better than vinegar and water, which left streaks when I used it. It's super easy to make and it only cost me $0.86 for 24 oz! Streak-free, smell-free, and stress-free. What's not to love?

Vinegar-Free Homemade Glass & Floor Cleaner Recipe

16 oz. water
4 oz. vodka
10-20 drops essential oils (optional)

I used the cheapest vodka I could find. Lately I've been loving pine essential oil in my homemade cleaners for the "clean" aroma and extra disinfecting power.

What homemade cleaners do you make?

Kendra started her blog after her husband suffered from mono symptoms for over two years and his blood results showed some liver disease.  Since the liver is responsible for filtering out chemicals and toxins from the bloodstream, she started to realize how many chemicals are in everything we buy, from processed food to household cleaners, lotion, and even air freshener.  She has become inspired to rid her home of as many chemicals as she can, one product at a time, and write about it along the way.

NO GRATE NO COOK LIQUID LAUNDRY DETERGENT

I've been making my own homemade laundry detergent for a few years now.  As much as I loved my powder laundry detergent AND my previous liquid laundry detergent, I grew tired of grating soap.  When I saw a pin on Pinterest from One Good Thing from Jilly on No Grate Laundry Detergent, I clicked on it right away!

I could not believe how easy this recipe was, and you won't either!
3 T. Borax, 3 T. Washing Soda & 3 T. Liquid Soap.
Add boiling water, do a little shimmy shake, and your DONE!

tablespoon

measuring cup

Dr. Bronners Peppermint Castile Soap

The original recipe called for Dawn dishwashing detergent and stated that it was great for grease stains. I wanted to keep mine a bit more pure and I had this Dr. Bronners Peppermint Castile Soap, so I decided to give it a try.  I have been very, very pleased with the results.  It washes just as well as my other homemade laundry detergents, but only takes a couple minutes to mix up. I used some old laundry detergent bottles I had saved from when I got tired of grating soap and bought detergent from Trader Joes.  They are 1/2 gallon size and perfect for reusing over and over.

Funnel

I like the ease of using a funnel and using my electric teapot to heat the water.  I love that I don't have to turn my stove on and boiling water is ready in seconds.  I will be sticking with this recipe! Easy!!

NO COOK NO GRATE
LIQUID HOMEMADE LAUNDRY DETERGENT

3 Tablespoons Borax
3 Tablespoons Washing Soda
3 Tablespoons Dawn Dish Detergent OR Dr. Bronner's Liquid Castile Soap

+++

4 cups boiling water (water doesn't count as cooking, right?!:))
Cold water

+++
Measure 3 tablespoons borax and 3 tablespoons washing soda into a glass measure.  I like to use on with a spout.  Mix together well.  Using funnel, pour into 1 gallon jug, Add 3 tablespoons soap.  Add 4 cups boiling water.  Shake well. Then fill to the top with cold water.  It will bubble up and it will also be quite runny.

*2 half gallon jug directions: Measure 3 tablespoons borax & 3 tablespoons washing soda in a 4 cup pyrex glass measure.  Mix.  Add 2 cups boiling water.  Mix.  Add 3 Tablespoons soap. Mix.  Divide this mixture evenly into each 1/2 gallon jug, using a funnel.  Add 1 more cup of boiling water to each jug.  Fill each jug to the top with cold water and shimmy shake it!

Use 1/2 cup-1 cup per load depending on how large and how soiled the load is.
It is not a sudsy detergent, and comments in original post say it is fine for HE washers.
Makes 1 gallon

AWESOME HOMEMADE ALL-PURPOSE CLEANER

If you read my post on Easy Homemade Glass Cleaner That Smells Awesome, you will know that I am on a Make-Your-Own kick when it comes to cleaners.  I am amazed at how easy, healthful, and inexpensive it is to make my own cleaners, and this Homemade All-Purpose Cleaner is my favorite so far.  I really feel like it has cleaning power, but I love that when I spray it I don't have to hold my breath!  If anything it is the opposite.  It uses lemon essential oil that smells so fresh and clean that it almost makes me WANT to clean....almost.

I chose Lemon essential oil as my scent.  I LOVE any citrus scent.  I got mine at my local health food store, but next time I will be ordering it from Organic Mountain Rose Herbs, where the price is much better!

All Purpose Cleaner
1/2 tsp. washing soda
1/2 tsp. castille soap (I use Dr. Bronners)

5 REASONS TO DRINK LEMON WATER IN THE MORNING

Number 1
It balances pH--Lemon is an acidic food, but once metabolized, it becomes alkaline.  I work very hard at keeping my body alkaline.  Why?

To put it most simply, alkalies help keep the oxygen in our blood at a safe pH level, and this helps our body heal itself, assimilate nutrients and fight off unwanted sickness.

I have read of many people who have fought their cancer nutritionally by focusing on the body's pH levels. Kris Carr, of Crazy Sexy Cancer has halted tumors growing in her liver for over 7 years by focusing on nutrition, including alkalizing foods.  I think that is crazy cool.  Even a little crazy sexy cool!!

I regularly check the pH of my body using these little pH strips.  I now know what foods --GREENS!--will keep my levels where they need to be.  I also believe lemon water helps this process.

Number 2
It keeps skin clear and glowing!   I have noticed this.  Hydration from drinking lemon water is great for moisturizing our skin from the inside out.  Lemon also contains lots of Vitamin C, which helps with wrinkles and blemishes.

Number 3
It kick starts the digestive system--a big glass of lemon water is a great way to start the day.  It encourages the liver to produce bile which in turn aids in digestion.  It increases urination which helps purify it.  It also helps with heartburn and constipation.

Number 4
It helps with weight loss--I have read that keeping the body in an alkaline state helps people lose weight faster.  Lemons are high in fiber pectin, which helps keep one full, longer.  They also have a diuretic effect, which helps with water weight gain.

Number 5
It helps control the coffee habit--I will drink coffee sometimes, but only if I have had my entire glass of lemon water.  Many days I feel like the lemon water wakes me up more than coffee does...

...which brings me to bonus Number 6:
It helps kick the pop habit--I have found that adding lemon to sparkling water and adding a whole lot of ice satisfies any soda craving I might have.  I gave up soda pop the minute I was diagnosed a year ago, and I really don't miss it.  I don't think I could stand the sweetness of it now, but I DO miss the fizz, so my "Lemon Spritzer"--lemon +sparkling water+ice--is the perfect solution!

My mom gave me this antique lemon press.  I just love it.  I think it is cute so it stays out on my counter top, on display, which is perfect since it is used every morning.

I use 1/2 lemon, add ice to a 24 ounce mason jar, and add water to the top.

So easy fun and easy to use!

I save the second half for a refreshing "Lemon Spritzer" (see #6) later in the day.

When I pour freshly squeezed lemon juice over ice, I get the same feeling one might get when popping the top of their pop can and fizz leaks out, Ahhh.... or maybe the same feeling of the champagne cork popping?  Ok..maybe not THAT good...

My lemon press is super easy to clean.  I just the remove the metal and rinse.

*Tip..use a straw to keep the acidic lemon off your teeth. (Remember, it is acidic until digested, then it turns alkaline)
I am not sure where you can get a press exactly like mine.  Like I said, my mom bought it for me, I think from an antique shop or maybe even a thrift store?

Thanks to your comments below, I am now saving my pennies for these beauties!

These glass straws are strong, durable, and GORGEOUS.
They offer several sizes, I love that the 12mm will make my daily green smoothie sipping much easier!
The also offer bead free, if you prefer plain glass.

ZIPLOCK FREEZER SMOOTHIE PACKS

I found the idea of these freezer smoothie packs on Pinterest from Budget Bytes.  I make a smoothie for myself almost everyday, and I love the idea of not having to lug 10 bags out of the freezer every time I go to make one!  Plus, now my kids can grab a bag from the freezer and make their own smoothies.

This is what my smoothie ended up looking like.  The color will all depend on what fruit you decide to put in it.

I had 5 bananas and a bunch of frozen fruit.

Raspberries, pineapple, blueberries and a cherry berry blend.

Peel the banana, you need one banana per Ziploc bag smoothie.  If you are not a banana lover, frozen peaches or mangoes are a great substitute, as they are hearty and will help make up the bulk of the smoothie.  A banana is so sweet and creamy, that it tends to be my favorite.

Add 1 cup of whatever type of frozen fruit you would like.

I did a combo of berries and pineapple here.

Just choose your favorites.  You can't go wrong!

To make the smoothie, put 2 handfuls of spinach (about 2 cups) in a blender.

Add 1 cup of your choice of milk. (Dairy, soy, almond or coconut.) I use almond.  Blend until spinach is chopped up teeny tiny.

Add your pouch of fruit containing 1 banana and 1 cup of assorted berries/fruit.

Blend.  See how the green disappears into a nice purple?  The kids will never know what is REALLY in there.  The spinach taste goes away thanks to the berries.

I  like to add Chia seeds for extra fiber and protein.  This is optional.  Some also like to add cinnamon. Some add protein powder or honey if the fruit is not sweet enough.  Make sure you taste.  The one I made today was so sweet, it DID NOT need any more sweetness.

This recipe made enough for a very full 12 oz mason jar...about 15 oz all together.

Enjoy!  So refreshing, and a great way to get in some of your servings of fruits and veggies each day!

Ziploc Smoothie
1 Ziploc
1 banana
1 cup assorted berries/fruit
2 cup baby spinach
1 cup milk (almond, dairy, coconut or soy)
---
Optional ingredients:
1/2 tsp cinnamon
2 tbsp chia seeds
1 scoop protein powder
Honey, Stevia or Agave to sweeten if needed

Make your Ziploc smoothie packs, each containing one banana and one cup of fruit.  Freeze until you are ready to use them, you can use one right away, the banana does not need to be frozen.

Place spinach in blender.  Add milk.  Blend until smooth.
Add Ziplock smoothie pack. Blend until smooth.
Add optional ingredients if desired. Blend until smooth.

A Little Bit About Blenders

Professional Grade High Speed Blender
Some of the best money I have ever spent!

This is the model I have.  I drooled over it for a couple of years!
It was a splurge, but worth EVERY penny.  I use it 2-3 times a day.
It makes crushed ice in seconds.  It takes almonds to almond butter in seconds.  It makes the best raspberry fruit purees for pancakes and ice cream--obliterates all those little seeds into smooth puree heaven! We are eating 3 times the amount of fruits and veggies since purchasing this amazing blender, which I know is keeping us out of the doctors' office and away from those expensive co-pays, so in my mind it has paid itself off.

I've never used one, but have heard good things about them.  They are not professional grade like the Vitamix, but the price is much easier to swallow and they are powerful.

{my old Oster on the left, my New Vitamix on the right}
I had one of these for years and it does the job.  You can't beat the price, and for smoothies, it works, although you have to blend much longer. You will still have chia and raspberry seeds in your smoothies, but if you don't mind the extra texture, this one will do.  If you have had a high speed blender, you will not be happy with this one.  If you are looking for something to get by until you can get a high speed blender, and to just get those smoothies in you, this will do just fine.
